Royal Netherlands Navy Acquires Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP)
The new Expeditionary Survey Boat (ESB) being constructed by Damen Shipyards for The Royal Netherlands Navy will be equipped with a Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP). The Dutch Navy are well-versed in the benefits of surveying with MVP; two of these underway profiling systems are currently in use on HNLMS Snellius and HNLMS Luymes.
Designed to conduct rapid environmental assessments and hydrographic surveys in shallow waterways such as river mouths, shipping channels, harbours, and coastal areas, the ESB will be expected to survey at five knots continuously. The compact MVP30-350 will perform near vertical profiles while the vessel is underway, and transmit depth referenced Sound Velocity data in real-time to the multibeam echosounder for immediate implementation, making it the natural solution for this shallow water survey vessel. The small size and automatic operation of the MVP30-350 make it the ideal model for the agile 15.7m ESB.
The MVP contract was secured through AML’s local agent, Seabed BV, of Amsterdam. The system is scheduled to be installed and commissioned during the third quarter of 2020. Built in Canadian manufacturer AML Oceanographic’s Atlantic office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, MVP systems have been supplied to many organizations around the world seeking to reduce the technical and financial unpredictability of hydrographic and ocean science surveys.
